Breaking! Appeal Court Reverses Decision on Enugu Lawmaker, Reinstates Labour Party Candidate

Confusion erupts as the Appeal Court in Lagos overturned the Enugu State Election Petition Tribunal's earlier decision, reinstating Hon. Williams Amuka of the Labour Party as the legitimate representative for Igbo Etiti West in the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The contentious legal battle ensued when Ugwu Charles Chukwuebuka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contested Amuka's victory declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). On September 30, the Election Petition Tribunal nullified Hon. Amuka's election, prompting the Labour Party candidate to take the case to the appellate court.

A unanimous decision by the three-man panel of justices, led by Hon. Justice Bolaji Yusuf, recognized the merit in Amuka's appeal, upholding INEC's declaration of him as the rightful winner of the March 18 House of Assembly election. Responding to the verdict, Chibuzor Ezike Esq., one of Hon. Williams Amuka's counsels, expressed gratitude to the Court of Appeal, stating, "It was shocking and surprising that the tribunal... turned 180 degrees and relied on a document that was rejected."

Ezike added, "The decision of the Court of Appeal is commendable and it has brought to an end the long journey of litigation which commenced right from when Hon. Amuka won his primary election." This reversal marks a significant development in Enugu's political landscape, concluding a legal battle that had persisted since the initial challenge to Amuka's victory.
