President Bola Tinubu has announced the appointment of Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu as the new Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Dr. Aliyu currently serves as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Jigawa State.
Alongside this significant appointment, Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu has been designated as the Secretary for the commission. These appointments were confirmed by the Presidency in an official statement released today.
Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, stated that President Tinubu exercised his authority as stipulated in Section 3(6) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. The decision aligns with Tinubu's commitment to the "Renewed Hope" mandate aimed at reforming key institutions and enhancing Nigeria's ongoing battle against corruption.
Ngelale further elaborated that the appointment is contingent upon approval by the Nigerian Senate. "The new Chairman of the ICPC is nominated for confirmation by the Nigerian Senate, following the President’s approval of the outgoing Chairman’s request to proceed on pre-end of tenure leave beginning on November 4, 2023, ahead of the expiration of his tenure on February 3, 2024," the statement indicated.
The appointment of Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu as Secretary of the Commission, however, does not necessitate Senate confirmation, and it takes immediate effect as directed by the President.
In his message to the new ICPC management, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of maintaining unwavering integrity and impartiality in their duties, regardless of the matters before them. The nation now awaits the Senate's confirmation of these appointments, which may mark a pivotal step in the ongoing anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria.
