DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Enugu Commissioner Decries the Domestic Brutality Meted on a Pregnant Woman by her Spouse in Enugu, Visits the Victim at ESUT Teaching Hospital Park Lane, Enugu ...Says the Ministry will ensure that the culprit is brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others. ...Says the Ministry's phone lines are open for reports of any form of domestic abuse.


In a distressing incident of domestic violence, the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, under the leadership of Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, has taken swift action to address the brutality inflicted upon a pregnant woman, Mrs. Patience Nwachukwu (Née Edeh), by her husband, Mr. Evidence Ugochukwu Nwachukwu.

Commissioner Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih expressed her commitment to ensuring that justice prevails in this case of domestic violence, stating that "the Ministry will make sure that the law takes its full course." The incident took a tragic turn as it was reported that Mrs. Nwachukwu lost her 5 months old pregnancy following the assault. Prompt intervention by the ministry is believed to have saved her life.

Hon. Enih, accompanied by a civil society organization, Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET) led by Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke JP, visited the victim, Mrs. Nwachukwu, at ESUT Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, Enugu. The gravity of the situation was evident as it was revealed that the assailant had physically attacked Mrs. Nwachukwu, causing her to lose her five-month pregnancy. He pushed her from their room, leading to a traumatic fall onto a block outside their house.

Mrs. Nwachukwu, who reported the abuse to the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development via WOSCONET, is demanding justice, while appreciating the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development for their intervention.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, along with the Chief Medical Director of ESUT Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, Enugu, Professor Bethrand Ngwu, both present at the hospital, condemned the act in its entirety. They urged victims of domestic violence to speak up and advised partners to control their anger.

Commissioner Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih described the situation as heartbreaking and emphasized that no one should ever have to endure such abuse. She reiterated the ministry's commitment to addressing such cases, stating that their phone lines are open to receive reports of any form of domestic abuse.

Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih further reassured the public that the offender, Mr. Evidence Ugochukwu Nwachukwu, will be brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate such heinous acts in the future.
