Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has regained his freedom after two years of legal battles in the Benin Republic. This development comes following his attempts to seek refuge from Nigerian authorities, which ultimately led to his arrest and trial in Benin.
Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, Igboho confirmed his newfound liberty and stated, "I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world." He emphasized that he had fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to his bail.
Sunday Igboho initially gained prominence in March 2021 when he declared the sovereignty of the Yoruba Nation. He launched a campaign against killer herdsmen and kidnappers in the South-West states, advocating for the return of Yoruba people from other regions.
However, his situation took a dramatic turn when, in July 2021, his Ibadan residence was invaded by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). This operation resulted in one fatality and the alleged recovery of firearms, charms, and ammunition from his home.
The Court of Appeal later overturned the judgment regarding the DSS raid in August 2022. Nevertheless, Igboho was arrested at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while attempting to flee to Germany.
Despite multiple attempts by the former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to repatriate him, those efforts proved unsuccessful. Sunday Igboho can now freely return to Nigeria and other countries, marking a significant development in his tumultuous legal journey.
