In a remarkable event at the NAF Conference Center in Abuja, the 2023 Africa Cassava Conference brought together leaders, experts, and stakeholders to explore the potential of cassava-based products in Africa and their role in industrialization. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah's vision to make Enugu State an export hub for cash crops has been spotlighted during the conference, with the Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialisation, Hon. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, presenting the state's comprehensive plan.
Honorable Ubru emphasized the importance of cassava in the economy of Enugu State and its potential as a driver of industrialization. "Enugu State, known for its significant cassava production, aims to create 300,000 hectares of farmland across its 17 local government areas to expand cassava production and develop related industries, promoting sustainable farming practices and ensuring food security" he said.
In his speech, Hon. Ubru further stated "Enugu State is also proactively establishing a land bank to simplify land acquisition for agricultural purposes, attracting both domestic and foreign investments in the cassava value chain and fostering industrialization and economic growth"
"Cassava's versatility and adaptability offer opportunities in various sectors, including food, feed, energy, and textiles. Enugu State's plan includes strategic partnerships with private investors in the development of the cassava-to-ethanol value chain, which aligns with sustainability goals. The state is prioritizing value addition and agro-processing, establishing modern processing centers to transform cassava into high-value products, such as flour, starch, ethanol, and industrial raw materials"
