In a remarkable milestone for Enugu State's economic future, Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Mbah has officially signed the Enugu State Electricity Bill into law. This event which held at the Government House in Enugu, marks a crucial step toward fostering economic growth and positioning the state as a premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and habitation.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Mbah emphasized the pivotal role of a stable power supply in realizing the state's economic aspirations. He stated that the ambitious goal of elevating Enugu State's economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion could only be achieved with consistent and reliable access to electricity. The Electricity Bill, presented to the House of Assembly a fortnight ago, is seen as the cornerstone of this endeavor.
Governor Mbah applauded the leadership and members of the House of Assembly for their swift passage of the bill and their bipartisan cooperation in advancing the state's interests.
He highlighted the significance of the bill in light of the Constitutional Amendment and the Electricity Act of 2023, which placed electricity on the concurrent list. This designation empowers Enugu State to participate fully in all facets of the electricity industry value chain.
With the new law, Enugu State is now poised to engage in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as establish a regulatory commission to oversee these activities. Governor Mbah stressed that this legislation is a pivotal instrument in realizing the state's development and growth objectives. He affirmed that industries and private sector investments crucially depend on a reliable power supply.
Governor Mbah concluded by expressing gratitude to the members of the Enugu State House of Assembly for their prompt handling of the bill, which has now become law, laying the foundation for a brighter economic future for Enugu State.
The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu (represented by Deputy Speaker Hon. Ezenta Ezeani), the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, and the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, among other state officials.
