Mbah's transformational leadership opens Enugu for investment and sustainable development By Nnamani Arinze Darlington

There are nine different leadership styles, and the type you use to direct your team can greatly impact your organization’s success. Each leadership style has its strengths, although some – like transformational, democratic and situational leadership – are commonly seen as more desirable.

Transformational leaders like Dr. Peter Mbah use their inspiring energy and personality to create an exceptional environment for businesses and economic development to thrive in the state. Mbah's transformational leadership approach has positively caused changes in the social and political system of the state as everything is no longer business as usual.

Ab initio, the state was known for housing the largest public service sector in the Southeast. This psyche made the state to be designed for public service driven economy, but the present administration under Gov. Mbah vowed to change the status-quo by ensuring that he makes the economy of the state a private sector driven economy. This is why the state has witnessed influx of both foreign and local investors in the state under few months into his administration.

It is on record that under the previous administration, the once peaceful Enugu State steadily grew into a theatre of war with attacks and clashes between the “unknown gunmen” led by Simon Ekpa and security agents. Secessionist struggles, cultism and communal clashes worsened. A report from the Nextier violent conflict database shows that 692 persons were killed in secessionist-related incidents in Southern Nigeria.

But since the inception of Governor Mbah on May 29th, we have seen him fight insecurity down to the barest minimum. He started by defeating the notorious Simon Ekpa and his terrorist group who kill and commit atrocities in Enugu and the Southeast, hiding under his illegal sit-at-home order.

“Courage is the main quality of leadership, in my opinion no matter where it is exercised. It often requires more courage to dare to do right than to fear to do wrong. I have learned over the years that when one's mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” These are the wise words of a philosopher that comes to mind when thinking about the experienced Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah.

Mbah has shown courage, he ordered for the removal of every barricade along the road at the Enugu Government House axis upon assumption of office, which psychologically restored confidence to the populace about the assurance that the government means business in taking care of their security and to protect their lives and properties. This is the undisputable fact of Mbah's success in the fight against insecurity in the state, knowing that insecurity is a poison that kills investment and sustainable development.

Few days ago, Mbah met with the delegates from Ethopian Airline. Their deliberations also highlighted the airline's commitment to providing specialized training for Enugu State youths, particularly in the aviation sector, with the support of Ethiopian Airlines Aviation University. Ethiopian Aviation Academy, which was established 65 years ago, making it the largest and oldest Aviation Academy in the region, the university is committed to developing a skilled workforce by offering undergraduate and postgraduate aviation programmes.

The University is expected to produce highly skilled aviation professionals and leaders that meet the growing human resource needs of Ethiopian Airlines Group and other airlines in the region. This meeting and agreement was deemed fit to take place in Enugu because the world has taken note of Mbah's focused and transformational leadership that is hell-bent on taking many youths off the streets, giving them meaningful jobs, growing the state productivity level, and growing the economy of the state exponentially. Without adequate productivity boost no economy truly grows. Peter Mbah understands that consumption without a high productivity score is an economic dead-end.

It is also on record that Governor Peter Mbah visited the World Bank Country Director, Shubham Chaudhur in his office in Abuja, last week Wednesday, where they held conversations on economic partnerships between Enugu State and the World Bank. This is Mbah doing things differently to attract investment and sustainable development for Ndi Enugu because investors are beginning to see a change of government that is not lackadaisical in providing solutions to the insecurity and other business-inhibiting issues in the state; a government that is intentional about providing all the enabling environment for businesses to thrive; a government that business owners and investors can trust.

This is why it is said that Mbah's transformational Leadership style is opening Enugu for investment and sustainable development. The Governor’s stints in private investments and business, his years of experience as the founder and CEO of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited assures investors that he, as a businessman understands the challenging aspects of doing businesses in Nigeria, and will work diligently to de-risk these challenges for private investors in Enugu.

When Mbah said he would migrate Enugu from being a public sector economy to a private sector economy, and grow the state GDP to $30b by 2030, it was not to score some campaign points; it is the center force of his administration.
