Liverpool Football Club has successfully secured a deal to sign 30-year-old midfielder Wataru Endo from Stuttgart. The accomplished Japanese international, who showcased his skills in the FIFA World Cup 2022 with four appearances, has officially inked a long-term contract with Liverpool. Pending international clearance and the completion of the work permit application process, Endo is set to don the No. 3 shirt for the team.
Expressing his excitement, Endo shared, "It feels amazing and this is my dream. It's always been a dream to play in the Premier League and with one of the biggest clubs in the world. It's a dream come true for me," as he conveyed his enthusiasm to the club's official website.
Primarily known for his role as a No. 6 defensive midfielder, Endo is eager to contribute his organizational skills to Liverpool's lineup. "I play as a No. 6 and I'm a bit more of a defensive player. I think I can help this club defensively and I will have good organization in the middle. I think that's my job," he explained. With his heart set on joining the club, he added, "I am very excited to join this club and I am looking forward to seeing you at Anfield!"
Endo's addition to Liverpool's roster comes after the club's previous attempts to secure Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, both of whom chose to join Chelsea. Jorg Schmadtke, Liverpool's sporting director, is credited with playing a significant role in the recruitment of Endo.
This signing is anticipated to be a shrewd move for Liverpool. Endo stood out in the Bundesliga last season, with only four players creating more chances from open play than him. Additionally, despite his height of 5 feet 10 inches, Endo boasts an impressive record of winning 219 aerial duels during his tenure in the German top flight, making him the midfield leader in this category.
Fans of Liverpool will have the opportunity to witness Endo's debut this Saturday as the team takes on AFC Bournemouth at Anfield. With his prowess on display, anticipation is high for the impact he will bring to the club's performance.
