Former Senator representing Anambra Central, Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), has been appointed as the Director-General of the South-East Governors Forum (SEGOF), two months after leaving her Senate seat.
The SEGOF is the coordinating body for the governors of the five states in Nigeria's South-East geopolitical zone, namely Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, and Abia States.
The appointment was communicated to Senator Ekwunife through a letter dated 31 July 2023, by the new Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.
In her new role, Senator Ekwunife will oversee the Forum's Secretariat in Enugu and collaborate with the five governors to pursue common objectives.
Ekwunife brings with her significant experience as both a technocrat and politician, having served as a former top bank executive and represented the Njikoka/Dunukofia/Anaocha Federal constituency in the House of Representatives. She later served as the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District on two occasions.
Governor Hope Uzodinma, who recently assumed the chairmanship of the South East Governors Forum, aims to reunite the Governors, inject new energy into the organization, and position it as a platform to impact the region's social, political, and economic affairs.
There are high expectations that the Forum will foster unity, enabling the region to regain its strong voice in both regional and national matters.
With Ekwunife leading the Secretariat, the Forum will function as a resource hub, facilitating the pooling of ideas and resources among the South-East governors to tackle common socio-economic challenges and undertake projects that will enhance the wellbeing of the region's people.
