A violent clash between Oyofo and Awha communities in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State has left four individuals dead and escalated tensions in the area. The dispute, which centers around land ownership, erupted on Friday morning, resulting in the destruction of five motorcycles and a tricycle.
The contentious land has been a source of conflict for over six decades, with both Oyofo and Awha communities claiming rightful ownership of the vast expanse. The longstanding feud reached a tragic climax at approximately 10 am, when violence broke out, leading to the loss of four lives.
According to a statement issued by Enugu State Police Command's Spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, swiftly responded to the situation by deploying police personnel to the affected communities. Their presence helped restore some level of order to the area, though tensions continue to simmer.
"The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the deployment of Police Operatives to Oyofo and Awha villages in Ezeagu Local Government Area, following the communal clash between the villages on 11/08/2023 at about 10 am," the statement read. "The deployment is to maintain the normalcy already restored in the area after the clash, which led to the murder of four males and the burning of one tricycle and five motorcycles."
As investigations unfold, twelve male suspects have been apprehended in connection with the violent clash and subsequent fatalities. Preliminary findings suggest that the conflict was fueled by the protracted dispute over land ownership between the two villages.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will keep the public informed of any further developments as they arise. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and finding sustainable solutions to longstanding conflicts within communities.
