In a heartfelt plea, the Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET), a leading women group in Nigeria, has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The group emphasizes that Kanu has been in protracted detention by the federal government, despite an Appeal Court order for his release.
Nnamdi Kanu, a British-Nigerian political activist, is widely known as the leader of The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), an organization he founded in 2014. He has been advocating for the secession and independence of Biafra from Nigeria.
In a statement made by the group through its Publicity Secretary, Igumbor Faith, in Enugu on Thursday, 23rd June, 2023 addressed the issues compounded by the prolonged detention of Mazi Kanu.
Statement Reads;
"Your Excellency, on behalf of Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET), we extend our heartfelt congratulations on your inauguration as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This historic moment fills us with hope and optimism for a brighter future under your leadership. As a women group in Nigeria, we are particularly thrilled to witness this significant milestone, as it symbolizes the progress we have made in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. We are confident that your Presidency will further advance our collective efforts in creating a more inclusive society, where the rights and contributions of women are recognized and celebrated"
"Your Excellency, recognizing the significance of family unity and the adverse effects of prolonged separation, the Women Support Women Community Network is appealing to Her Excellency Remy Tinubu, to intercede on behalf of women to seek for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. We hope that Her Excellency can leverage her position and influence to engage with His Excellency, and facilitate the release of Mazi Kanu''
"Your, Excellency, on behalf of WOSCONET, we empathize with the plight of Kanu's family, stressing that his wife and children deeply miss him. The extended absence of a husband and father figure has profound emotional and practical consequences for the family unit"
"Considering his current critical health condition at the DSS detention and the tension it has already generated, WOSCONET firmly believes that the release of Nnamdi Kanu will not only address the concerns of his immediate family but also contribute to fostering an environment of reconciliation and national unity and as well quel the tension and high level of insecurity in the South Eastern Region of Nigeria" especially the sit at home.
"Your Excellency, we call for a peaceful resolution to the situation, highlighting the importance of dialogue and understanding in addressing the grievances of marginalized regions"
