History was made in Enugu State on Monday 5, June, 2023, as residents, artisans and workers highly complied with the directive of Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on the ban of sit-at-home order in the state.
Leading by example, Governor Mbah, who was in office by 8 am on the day and later visited streets, ministries, markets and major roads across Enugu metropolis reiterated his determination and commitment to end the Monday sit-at-home order in Enugu State.
The 70 per cent compliance by the residents and people of Enugu State is a clear indication that they are tired of the sitting at home on Mondays and are in support and agreement with Governor Mbah to end it.
Across the markets, roads and markets, Governor Mbah visited were overwhelming joy and enthusiasm on the faces of the people. Even the apologists and sympathisers of the sit-at-home order who initially opposed and doubted the sincerity and commitment of Governor Mbah to end the order have commended Governor Mbah and Ndi Enugu on the level of compliance and success recorded.
Not missing in this are the factional leaders of IPOB and members, who have not only eulogised Governor Mbah and people of the state for a peaceful and massive compliance.
It is commonsensical and possible that with the level of peaceful and willing compliance by the residents and Governor Mbah's demonstration of leadership, readiness and commitment on the day one of the Monday sit-at-home ban, subsequent Mondays will surely witness increased compliance and commitment among the residents.
This will restore and revive the economic viability, productivity and stability of the state that had been affected by the Monday sit-at-home order since September 21, 2021 and the Convid 19 pandemic that once crippled the global economy.
For those who are of the view that continued observation of sit at home order will facilitate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's release, I disagree with them. It is evident since September 2021 that Monday sit-at-home order came into effect, that more souls have been lost, thecconomy has suffered, precious time and manpower have been wasted in Southeast region.
These may and cannot be recovered again in the nearest future, if they can be recovered at all. Who are those affected by these losses? Are they not the people and governments of the Southeast region? They are.
As it is now, the best approach to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's incarceration is political. It is clear that legal action has not achieved the desired result. I can vividly recall that the same political approach led to the unconditional release of Kanu's estranged godfather, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike of MASSOB, Asari Dokubo, Dr. Frederick Fasheun and other separatist leaders during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo's administration.
