Anti-party activities could be seen as actions taken by politicians that undermine the interests of their political parties such as openly criticising the party leadership, working against the party's candidates in elections or campaigning, promoting and supporting another party while still a member of the party. These actions are prevalent among politicians who have lost out in their party’s internal power struggles. This phenomenon has raised concerns about the integrity of the political system and the future of democracy in Nigeria.
Generally, the Nigerian political scene has witnessed a surge in anti-party activities among politicians as the political season, a trend that has been observed across the political spectrum, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and even the New Wave Party on the block, the Labour Party (LP) fueled by young persons eager for a change in the status quo ante (the Obidients Movement).
"It is very easy to blame others and easier to give excuses, but everyone is guilty in Enugu and has in one way or the other played anti-party, nobody should crucify another for the same offense he has also committed. Chimaroke Nnamani despite being a PDP member and a PDP candidate openly supported and endorsed Bola Tinubu, same way some of us from PDP supported Peter Obi and same way some PDP big men chose either a senator or a house of assembly member from a different party but supported Peter Mbah’s gubernatorial candidacy"
"In Igbo-Etiti Local Government where i come from, the people calling for meetings for house of assembly aspirants from other political parties were the highest stakeholders in the PDP, I mean those we were looking up to. Some of them lost house of representatives election and were hellbent on making sure everyone looses"
"Everyone played antiparty starting from Ebeanọ down to the least person who voted for Peter Obi because he is an Igbo presidential candidate and of course our own. Even if Peter was your blood brother and you campaigned for him and voted for him it is still an anti-party action, you see? Do not cast a stone. Now,
let me shock you, the antiparty was done more by our biggest stakeholders and they know the truth"
"However, Chimaroke Nnamani should not cry more than everyone that lost an election, he is not the only person that lost an election, everyone else did and life goes on"
"The Government house is nobody's permanent residence. It's turn by turn, the occupant today may be a visitor tomorrow, everyoneshould come together let's forge ahead" he concluded.
The house of representatives, Yakubu Dogara has switched parties of late, and it is unclear where he belongs presently as he left the APC because of the Muslim-Muslim ticket and joined the PDP, where he endorsed Atiku. However, he was openly campaigning for the APC gubernatorial candidate, Abubakar Sadique, in his home state of Bauchi. He justified his decision by saying he follows candidates and not political parties.
Gov. Ortom openly endorsed the LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi. It remains to be seen if the party will have the courage to suspend or expel any of the G5 Governanors. Just to name but a few.
