Hinging on the need for a legal framework that aims at promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of life, transformative solutions for inclusive development, and the encouragement of accessible and equitable society, the Enugu State House of Assembly has completed all the bill processes, stages, adopted and signed the disability bill into law to enhance inclusion as an essential condition to upholding human rights.
The Executive Director, Heroine Women Foundation and State Sub-Committee Chairman, Gender Based Violence, Welfare and Support, Amb. Mrs Onyinye Mamah applauded the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the members of Enugu State House of Assembly for their conformity to the yearnings of Persons with Disabilities in the state through their concerted efforts with stakeholders and heads of Persons with Disability Community to swiftly pass the Disability Bill into Law.
While commending Gov. Ugwuanyi for demonstrating his commitment to the wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state, saying that he has written his name in sands of time as the Disability Bill will serve as one of his numerous legacies he will be remembered for. Mrs Mamah appreciated the leader of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu and his deputy, Hon. Onyinye Ugwu and other team members of the special committee who followed up on the bill, her colleagues, sister bodies and leaders of civil society organisations who were very instrumental to achieving the feat for their courage and persistence, noting the outstanding efforts of, Barr. Catherine Edeh, the Executive Director of Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI), Mr. Onyebuchi Mbah, the Chairman of JONAWPD, Mrs Miriam Menkiti, the Executive Director of WINET, Dr. Ifeoma Chukwuma, the Executive Director of EMINET and a host of others.
It could also be recalled that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State gave executive backing for the domestication of the Nigerian Disability Act by the State House of Assembly in April 8, 2022 when he officially gave the approval when representatives of Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) visited him at the Government House Enugu. A visit the leader of the delegation and consultant to VDI, Mrs. Onyinye Mamah, on behalf of Persons with Disabilities, commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his passion and commitment to the wellbeing of PWDs, the passage of the Child Rights Act and Violence against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act into law in Enugu State, as well as the entrenchment of peace, security and good governance in the state.
According to Mrs. Onyinye Mamah; "Disability Inclusion Strategy provides the foundation for sustainable and transformative progress in all pillars of State policies that reaffirms that the full and complete realization of the human rights of all persons with disabilities is an inalienable, integral and indivisible part of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Commitment to realizing these rights of persons with disabilities is not only a matter of justice, rather, it is an investment in a common future. We look forward to a quick assent of His Excellency on the law " she said.
