I have never been as proud of Enugu people as I am today. The just concluded Guber Election has vindicated my long-standing belief that when it really matters we will always close ranks knowing full well that, in the final analysis, the interest of the State supersedes that of the individual or group. Of course, there were cases of brickbats, name-calling and needless confrontations, but generally we displayed decorum, civility and occasionally even a good sense of humour.
Today, the elections have been peacefully wrapped up. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and Ifeanyichukwu Ossai are destined to lead Enugu State for the next four years. To God be the glory! The joy that enveloped the entire State and the ululations that burst out among the crowd gathered at Enugu INEC on Wednesday night when Peter Mbah was declared Governor-Elect was overwhelming. It was a demonstration that the will of the Almighty has coincided with the will of man, after all, the Bible teaches that no man shall prevail by his own strength.
Since that fateful Wednesday night, congratulations, encomiums, and goodwill messages have continued to pour in for Mbah and Ossai. It is more than deserved!
But the real winners are Not Peter Mbah and Ifeanyi Ossai. It is you and I; it’s the ordinary people of 042, the historical State of legendary leaders. How many of you have seen the Acceptance Speech of Peter Mbah? Go look for it and read! Mbah and Ossai are indeed new Sheriffs in town – no rancour, no bitterness, no 95% VS 5%. His Acceptance Speech demonstrates that in spite of all the political rumblings, his love for Nsukka people has not faltered – he is set to double-lane the Ugwuogo Nike – Opi Nsukka road. And in the next 180 days, residents in Enugu Capital will have clean water gushing forth in their homes.
Also, my love for Peter Gregory Obi doubled when he courageously set aside party affliation to pitch tent with Peter Mbah. Mr Obi had known Dr Mbah in Lagos as a business man of magisterial capacity, and had supported him all the way even risking the ire of his party members.
Today, we have Alex Oti, a banker and businessman, in Abia State; Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, a voluminous economist, in Anambra State; Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, a peerless enterprenuer and supremely brilliant businessman, in Enugu State. How could Chijioke Edoga have fit into this picture? How can he find his bearing in the presence of these finance gurus? Thankfully, The One On High has answered our prayer! By the time these leaders assemble to discuss the future of infrastructures in the South-East, Enugu will have a masterly voice to represent our interest.
Some of us marshalled out our energies to fight and deflate the litany of lies that some conscienceless folks were churning out to bolster Edoga’s battered image as a non-performing politician. We stood on the side of truth and fairness unapologetically, boldly, and un-sentimentally. It has yielded fruit. To God be the glory! I thank Reuben Onyishi, Onyekachi Ugwu, Samson Ezea and a host of others for their masterful biros.
Let me repeat here that Chijioke Edoga represents the Enugu we all would like to put behind us; he has been there for more than thirty years, and cannot shake off the fact that he is on the front-row as one of those self-obsessed and self-serving politicians who immersed us in our present miasma of impoverishment and misery. This is the truth, permanent, inerasable.
Is it true that the guy wants to go to court? Hahahahahaha! The man get plenty agrima shaa. The person who stepped on the millipede is jumping about and squawking, what about the millipede, whose head was almost crushed by wandering legs? Those who are close to him should advise him not to open a can of worms. There is plethora of evidence that points to hacking and malpractices, but we can let sleeping dogs lie for the sake of our beloved Enugu.
My Confidential Secretary is from Nkanu East. He has been feeling depressed since the result was announced. He is convinced that his brother has been short-changed. There were Nkanu East indigenes living in other States, who transferred their PVCs to their LGA to be able to cast their votes for Peter Mbah. My Secretary was an INEC Adhoc staff, and recorded eight hundred and fifty votes in his polling unit, all duly captured in the BVAS. Yet they said Nkanu East gave only sixteen thousand votes; some extremely daft ones even place the figure at seven thousand. Mana yadiba.
We know who militarised the election of 18th March; we know that some PDP faithfuls came under the jackboot of the soldiers even before voting had started; we also know that voters were cowed to stay put in their homes in PDP strongholds. Someone orchestrated all this. Yet, we all lay claim to character and decency. We will put all that behind us mana ozo emezina!
It’s time to let peace reign so that Peter Mbah and Ifeanyi Ossai can deliver on their ambitious manifesto.
God bless Enugu State!
Dr Hyginus Eze
