The owners and management of the Sun Newspaper have sacked a freelance reporter, Jude Chinedu over fake statements and reports he credited to some members of Enugu House of Assembly on the security situation in Enugu State that has been under control.
Chinedu, who wrote a fake, skewed and fabricated reports misquoting some House of Assembly members on the security in the state, which was published in The Sun Newspaper of December 14, 2022 with the headline "Enugu Assembly Decries Insecurity In Enugu, Demand Ugwuanyi's Action" failed to provide incontrovertible evidence to substantiate the authenticity of the report, when confronted by the management of The Sun Newspaper, following protest and demand for retraction and apology by the leadership of the Enugu State House of Assembly.
Investigations revealed that it was Chinedu, who fabricated the fake report and shared to other journalists who published the story without ascertaining its veracity, considering that none of them including Chinedu was in the House of Assembly during their session.
Sources disclosed that some of the journalists, who fell prey to Chinedu's antics by sending the unverified and fake report which was published by their organisations have regretted their actions as they are being interrogated by the employers on the source of the fake news and evidence of its authenticity.
One of the affected journalists, who pleaded anonymity disclosed that Chinedu has been in the habit of collecting money  to share fake stories to his innocent colleagues for publication.
"This is not the first time he is engaging in this kind of unprofessional conduct that has made many reputable media organisations not to engage his service on permanent basis," the affected journalist said.
